Two Poems by Kevin Barcellos

The Ex-Girlfriend

After six
strawberry
daiquiris
and three
bowls of smoke
wearing an empty
box of Budweiser
as a helmet,
she jumped from
the trampoline
into my chest,
giving me an
ambulance ride
to the hospital,
seven staples
in my head,
and another
herniated
Lumbar disk.

Sandy Mush

Waiting for my
release from
this Merced
county
correctional
facility, I play
chess. And
on television
I watch "Cops
in San Antonio"
with my
seventeen
convicted
roommates,
while rolling
a joint with
the pages of
Deuteronomy,
chapter twenty-five,
verses one
through four.

I certainly hope these poems were written from imagination and not from personal experience. Either way, they move the reader.
